Tactical Training

Log a training run while it happens — every phase mark with a timestamp, plus photos and voice notes on the same clock. Afterwards read off the split times, compare the run with the others and file everything as a report.

What this tool is not

It is not an assessment and does not replace a training sheet. Whether a run was good enough is decided by the trainer, not the clock. This tool takes the time and records what happened when.

It is not a regulation and not training material. The built-in exercise types are suggestions derived from publicly available descriptions of sequences and have not been checked against any service regulation. They describe when a phase ends, not how it is to be handled. Go through them with your own unit before the first serious use.

It is not suitable for monitoring people under strain. Nothing on which a life directly depends may hinge on a browser window staying open.

1 · First visit

The page needs no sign-in and no account. Open the address and you are done. On the first visit with a connection it stores itself on the device; after that it also runs without a network (chapter 11).

Put it on the home screen

A browser clears the storage of an ordinary web page sooner or later — on the iPhone after just seven days without a visit, runs and photos included. As an app on the home screen, that does not happen.
iPhone and iPad: the share button in Safari, then “Add to Home Screen”. Android: the menu, then “Install app”.

The same tool has three sections: Rope Rescue Exercise Log, Performance record and Tactical Training. The section is part of the address — einsatztraining.en.html always opens this one — and is remembered after that. Each section keeps its own runs; you switch in the “About” tab. Nothing is lost in the process: the backup in the archive always takes the whole store with it, whichever section it comes from.

2 · The built-in exercise types

Eleven templates in two groups, plus the Free exercise with no fixed marks at all.

Group “Tactical Training”

Group “Specialist units”

Why the specialist unit marks are coarse

They end at phase boundaries that appear in any operations log anyway. Anything finer does not belong in a file that sits on a web server, and it would only be wrong there anyway: there is no public regulation for specialist unit procedures from which marks could be derived — and that is the employer's intention, not an oversight.

Whoever wants to measure more finely sets up the marks as their own template. Your own templates stay in the device's browser and only leave it if you pass them on as a file yourself.

3 · Setting up a run

The preparation, in the Exercise tab. Everything in it can still be changed later; if you are in a hurry, press “Start exercise” straight away.

After the first run it goes faster: in a finished run, “Next run” carries on with the same exercise type and series and only asks for the team.

4 · Taking times while it runs

“Start exercise” sets the clock to zero. From then on it counts, and at the top you also see the split time since the last mark.

5 · Correcting and adding later

You always press too late. That is why every entry can be changed afterwards:

Nothing is deleted silently: whatever was changed can be recognised as such on the timeline.

6 · Reviewing

The Review tab, as soon as the run has ended.

7 · Many teams, one building: the comparison

The Compare tab. It sets side by side every run in the same exercise series — one team per row, one mark per column. That is exactly what the “exercise series” field is for: without the same entry, the comparison cannot bring the runs together.

This is the view that makes all the effort worthwhile: twenty runs of the same scenario, and you can see at a glance where it took long for which team.

8 · Two trainers, one log

Before the run, device 1 hands out a tiny handover file (“For 2nd device”); both then record against the same start time. Afterwards the backup from device 2 is read in and merged into the existing run.

If the clocks differ, a slider shifts the imported log by seconds — the preview shows the two interleaved. Reading the same file twice duplicates nothing. Every entry then carries the device it came from: in the timeline and in the PDF.

9 · Adjusting marks and your own templates

Whoever always uses the same marks sets them up once instead of before every run. In the preparation, arrange the marks, enter target times and keep them with “Save as your own template”. After that they appear in the “Exercise type” field under “Your own templates”.

A template file can be passed on — before a training day this gives every trainer the same marks and target times, and the times become comparable. The file goes whichever way you send it; it is uploaded nowhere.

10 · Report and PDF

The report is produced on the device and needs no connection. The PDF is typeset by the server, so that the sheet looks the same everywhere — with header, footer, split times, table of figures, timeline including photos, and the list of observations.

Your own letterhead as a PDF can be stored; it is placed under every page. On the shared installation, the file stays in the browser and is only sent along for that one print job.

The confirmation sheet with signature lines for the training lead and the assessor depends on the licence; without it, a specimen print with a watermark is produced.

11 · Without a connection

Recording, correcting, reviewing, comparing and backing up run entirely on the device. Without a network, the PDF button says so; the PDF can be made at any time later, since the run is stored on the device. What to do without a network: store the backup in the archive — it contains everything.

Put it on the home screen

This gives the tool its own icon, and it starts without an address bar or tabs. More important than the looks is the storage: on the iPhone, Safari clears the storage of an ordinary page after seven days without a visit — runs and photos included. iOS treats an installed app differently and does not clear it.

DeviceHow
iPhone, iPad Open the page in Safari, tap the share icon at the bottom (a box with an arrow pointing up), then “Add to Home Screen” and “Add”.
Android Open the page in Chrome, tap the menu at the top right (three dots one above the other), then “Install app” or “Add to Home screen”.
Computer Chrome and Edge show an install icon on the right of the address bar. It is not needed there — a bookmark is enough.

Install first, then record

On the iPhone, the installed app is a space of its own: it does not see Safari's storage, and Safari does not see its storage. Whatever was recorded in Safari beforehand is missing there — it is not lost, it is still in Safari (chapter 12).

So: install it before the first run. Whoever has already recorded makes a backup to a file in the Archive tab and reads it in again in the installed app.

On Android the question does not arise — there the installed app works in the same storage as Chrome.

On managed work devices, adding to the home screen may be blocked. Then it stays a page in the browser — and the backup after every training day matters all the more. Where the tool runs on your own installation, the same applies: your own address can be installed too.

You never need to reinstall anything because of this: every time it starts with a connection, the installed tool also fetches the latest version.

12 · Where the data lives — the most important chapter

In the browser, nowhere else. The runs are in localStorage, the photos in IndexedDB — both locally on the device. There is no upload, no access from outside and no sign-in.

“In the browser” means: in exactly this browser

The storage does not belong to the address but to the program that opened it. The same address in Safari and in Chrome is two separate spaces — and a link that someone taps in a messenger app goes into a third: these apps bring their own browser, which keeps its own storage and clears it without warning. The Archive tab shows at the top which container the list is currently in.

The one exception, and it is your decision: pressing “Create PDF” sends the log of that one run, including its photos, to the server, which typesets the document from it and sends it back. Nothing is stored there. Whoever does not want that either does without the PDF; the recording itself never leaves the device.

13 · Running it inside the agency network

For units whose devices have no open internet — and for specialist units that is the rule — the intended way to run it is your own installation. FW Tools is a set of files: HTML with embedded CSS and JavaScript, plus a few PHP files for producing PDFs. No database, no framework, no sign-in, no outbound connection. A web server with PHP is enough.

The licence key is then stored once in the server's configuration and applies to every browser on that installation; nobody has to paste in a key. After that, not even the PDF leaves the network. For setting it up: contact.

14 · Names, photos and what is not collected

No field in this tool asks for a name. For the review, a role or a number is enough — Team 1, Group 2, Trainer 1. The comparison works with these labels just as it would with names, and what is never collected needs neither protecting nor deleting.

For photos of people the tool explicitly makes no provision. The rules of your own unit apply there. When in doubt, do not take a photo — press the voice note instead: it records the sequence without storing a face.

15 · Licence

Recording, correcting, reviewing, comparing and backing up work without a key — fully and permanently. The key unlocks what ends up in the file: the confirmation sheet in the PDF with the signature lines. Without a key, the PDF is produced as a specimen print with a watermark.

Agencies have their own price scale, because their procurement routes differ from those of a fire brigade. It is on the pricing page (German).

16 · Frequently asked questions

Have the exercise types been checked against a service regulation?

No, and it says so explicitly. They are suggestions, derived from publicly available descriptions of sequences. Go through them before the first training day, throw out what your unit does not measure, and add what is missing — that is what your own templates are for.

We are not allowed to send data to an outside server.

Then do without the PDF — everything else runs on the device — or run your own installation inside the agency network (chapter 13). For specialist units, that is the intended setup.

When exactly do I press “Start exercise”?

At the moment from which you want to measure — usually the word that releases the run. Everything after that is a mark, not the start.

The team was quicker than I could press.

Press anyway. The time can be corrected on the entry afterwards (chapter 5); a mark that was never pressed cannot be worked out later.

A run is missing from the comparison.

Almost always the “exercise series” field says something different — a space, a different year. The comparison groups by exactly this entry.

Yesterday's training day has gone.

Then the page was opened in a different browser from the one used for recording — or the browser cleared its storage (chapter 12). That is why: store the backup from the archive after every training day, and put the page on the home screen.

Where are my runs from the rope rescue section?

Where they were recorded. Each section keeps its own list; you switch in the “About” tab. The backup always takes every section with it.

Is there an app in the App Store?

No — and nothing is missing. Added to the home screen (chapter 11), the tool has an icon, starts without an address bar, runs without a network and uses the camera and microphone like an app from the store. Just without installation, without an account and without a version that has to match the device. For agencies this is also the simpler route: there is nothing to package and nothing to roll out through device management.

Where the templates come from

The phase marks are derived from publicly available descriptions of sequences and phases, and they describe points in time, not procedures. They have not been checked against any service regulation and have not been reviewed by any authority. FW Tools has no connection with any federal or state police authority.
